Why Lady Bird?
The former First Lady, Lady Bird Johnson, was born in the tiny East Texas town of Karnack. Born Claudia Alta Taylor in 1912, her nanny gave her the nickname Lady Bird, and it stayed with her throughout her lifetime. Lady Bird died in 2007 at the age of 94, but her contribution to the nation’s roadways, the environment, and Austin continues on. Lady Bird Lake is just one of many landmarks named in commemoration of Lady Bird Johnson. This river-like reservoir is on the Colorado River in Austin. In 1960, the City of Austin created the reservoir as a cooling pond for a new city power plant. The lake has a surface area of 416 acres and is now used primarily for recreation and flood control.
