Why Deep Eddy?
Deep Eddy is named after a spot that began as a natural swimming hole in a section of the Colorado River that flows through Austin. People used to swim in a portion of the river where a large boulder formed an eddy. Later, the land surrounding the pool was purchased, and a concrete pool was built and served as the centerpiece of a resort, the Deep Eddy Bathing Beach, which featured cabins, camping, and concessions. In 1935, the City of Austin bought the property for $10,000. A massive flood damaged the pool and bathhouse, but it was reconstructed and reopened in 1936. Through the years, many additions and renovations have taken place, with the most recent being completed in 2012, which included extending the pool and adding a beach entry.
